10 Helpful Packing Tips
For using a Storage Unit
Considering a storage unit for your New Years resolution of decluttering your home? Here’s some tips to help get you started to achieve your goal!
1. Shop around for the best storage unit for your needs. Things to consider may be location, size, climate controlled, access hours.
If you will be storing items that you need access to often, try to find a location that is close in proximity.
If you will not be accessing these items often then you may can find a better deal at a storage facility that is a little farther away.
2. Invest in good quality storage boxes. These can have various uses for many years. Also, choose boxes that stack easily such as these tough storage totes from Home Depot. Label each box with the room it is destined for and what’s inside. This can be a tremendous help if you happen to pack something that is needed before storing. Make it easier by using a labeling system with an index card filing system. Use an index card for each box and list what is in the box. Then label each box with a number corresponding with the index card. Or, if you really want to organize your storage, invest in a scannable labeling system such as ToteScan. This system uses an app to help you itemize your storage system to find things quick and easily!
3. Pack heavier items at the bottom of the box and lighter items on the top. Distribute items so that boxes aren't too heavy. Using towels, sheets, or blankets in between well wrapped breakables can help reduce weight as well as protect items.
4. Use shelves to stack items so that boxes can be accessed easily. Most storage facilities have 8 foot ceilings so shelves such as these tote racks fit easily and allow you to access your totes with ease.
5. When disconnecting electronics such as computers, TVs, projectors or stereos, make sure to take a picture of the setup so that you can reconnect them later.
6. Use smaller boxes for heavier items and larger boxes for lighter items.
7. Storing seasonal clothing can help utilize closet space. Use wardrobe boxes to move clothes on hangers or use trash bags and cut a slit in the bottom to run the hangers through. Tie the hangers together with rubber bands and tie a knot at the bottom to keep the clothes from dragging on the ground while moving. Also, using clear boxes for sweaters or other clothing items will help identify what is in each box.
8. Secure drawers in dressers and desks with packing tape. You can also pack mirrors between mattresses to help protect them. Tape an "X" across the mirrors and frames. This will not prevent your mirror from breaking but it might help keep the glass in the frame should it shuffle during the move.
9. Place books in small boxes, and distribute the weight evenly. The same with small collectible items.
10. Keep items you will be accessing most often in the front. To do this, pack these items first so that they will be last when you arrive at your storage facility.
